In a Lyft accident in Fort Lauderdale? Call Kurzman Law Group as soon as possible – preferably from the scene if you are safely able to do so. Whether you were riding as a Lyft passenger, driving another vehicle, or were struck by a Lyft driver, we can investigate what happened, determine which insurance coverage may apply, communicate with the insurance companies on your behalf, and guide you through the medical, vehicle, and claim issues that follow.
A Lyft accident can look like an ordinary car accident at first, but the insurance issues may be very different. A Lyft driver may have a personal automobile policy, insurance connected with the Lyft platform, and different coverage depending on what the driver was doing in the Lyft app when the collision occurred.
The key questions are often practical: Was the Lyft app off? Was the driver online and waiting for a ride request? Had the driver already accepted a passenger? Was the driver on the way to pick someone up or already carrying a passenger? Those facts can materially affect which insurance applies and how much coverage may be available.
You should not have to figure that out while you are dealing with pain, a damaged vehicle, medical appointments, missed work, transportation problems, or calls from insurance adjusters. Kurzman Law Group can investigate the Lyft driver’s status and handle the insurance communications while you focus on yourself and your family.

What Should I Do
Immediately After a Lyft Accident?
Your first concern should be safety. If anyone may be seriously hurt, call 911. If emergency personnel recommend evaluation or transportation, make the decision based on your medical condition and safety rather than simply on concern about the ambulance or emergency-room bill. If you are dizzy, confused, in significant pain, having difficulty moving, or experiencing symptoms that could make driving unsafe, do not try to drive yourself.
If you can safely do so, preserve the information already available in the Lyft app and document the scene. The Lyft trip receipt, driver’s name and photograph, vehicle information, pickup and destination, trip time, photographs of the vehicles, and witness contact information may later help establish the ride and what happened.
When speaking with the investigating officer, provide accurate facts about what you actually remember. Do not guess or speculate about details you are unsure of, and do not make legal conclusions about fault. If you are safely able to do so, call Kurzman Law Group from the scene. Early involvement can help us identify the drivers, insurance companies, trip information, and evidence that may need to be preserved.
Should I Speak With Lyft or an Insurance Adjuster After the Accident?
Speak with Kurzman Law Group before giving a detailed statement about how the crash happened, your physical condition, your medical history, or settlement. Reporting that an accident occurred is different from giving an insurer a detailed recorded statement.
An adjuster may contact you before you know whether soreness will disappear or become more serious. The insurer may ask about what happened, what you said at the scene, whether you believe you are injured, prior accidents, prior medical conditions, treatment, or whether you will give a recorded statement. You do not need to negotiate those issues on your own.
Kurzman Law Group can communicate with the insurance carriers on your behalf and help protect your rights while the claim is being investigated. Your own insurance company may also require prompt notice, but that does not mean you should handle every substantive insurance conversation without legal guidance.
Who Pays If My Lyft Driver
Caused the Accident?
One of the first questions is what the Lyft driver was doing in the app when the crash occurred. Florida Statute §627.748 distinguishes between a driver who is simply logged into a transportation network company’s digital network and a driver who is engaged in a prearranged ride.
Under Florida law, a prearranged ride begins when the driver accepts a rider’s request through the digital network, continues while the driver transports the rider, and ends when the last rider exits. During a prearranged ride, Florida requires at least $1 million in primary automobile liability coverage for death, bodily injury, and property damage.
That does not mean every Lyft accident is worth $1 million. Insurance limits and case value are not the same thing. The value of a claim depends on the injuries, medical treatment, future needs, lost income, legal responsibility, available evidence, and other circumstances. But identifying the correct insurance is a critical first step.

What Insurance Applies When the Lyft App Is On
but No Ride Has Been Accepted?
Florida law treats this period differently from an accepted Lyft ride. When the driver is logged into the digital network but is not yet engaged in a prearranged ride, the statute requires primary liability coverage of at least $50,000 per person for death or bodily injury, $100,000 per incident, and $25,000 for property damage.
Lyft’s current insurance information describes a similar three-stage structure: the app is off; the app is on and the driver is available to receive requests; and the driver is en route to pick up a passenger or is already on a ride. Lyft states that when the app is on and the driver is waiting for requests, it maintains third-party liability coverage for covered accidents if the driver’s personal insurance does not apply, at limits of at least $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
The driver’s app status is therefore not a minor technical detail. A driver saying, ‘I was driving for Lyft,’ does not answer the insurance question. We need to know exactly what the Lyft app shows at the moment of the crash.

What If the Lyft Driver Was Offline?
Lyft states that when the app is off, the driver’s personal automobile insurance applies. That creates a very different insurance situation from a crash that occurs while the driver is online and available or already engaged in a ride.
A person can regularly drive for Lyft and still be involved in an accident that has nothing to do with Lyft coverage. Kurzman Law Group investigates the actual app status rather than relying simply on the driver’s occupation or what someone says at the scene.
What If Another Driver Caused the Crash
While I Was Riding in a Lyft?
A Lyft passenger can be injured even when the Lyft driver did nothing wrong. Another driver may rear-end the Lyft, run a red light, make an improper left turn, move into the Lyft’s lane, fail to stop, or cause a multi-vehicle collision.
The other driver’s liability insurance may become an important source of recovery, but the analysis should not necessarily stop with that driver’s insurance card. Depending on the facts and policies involved, other insurance may also need to be investigated.
Kurzman Law Group can identify the potentially responsible drivers and determine which available policies need to be pursued instead of leaving you caught between insurance companies that each blame someone else.
What If a Lyft Driver Hit My Car?
You do not have to be a Lyft passenger to have a Lyft-related accident claim. A Lyft driver may strike another vehicle while waiting for a ride request, traveling to pick up a passenger, carrying a passenger, changing lanes, turning, entering or leaving a pickup area, or traveling through congested traffic.
The driver’s app status may affect which insurance applies. If a Lyft vehicle hits your car, do not assume the driver’s personal insurance card tells the entire story. Kurzman Law Group can investigate the driver’s Lyft status and the available coverage while also helping guide the property-damage and injury-claim process.
What If the Lyft Driver Says He Was Not Working at the Time?
That is something to investigate, not simply accept. The Lyft app and trip records may help establish whether the driver was offline, online and available, matched with a passenger, traveling to a pickup, or actively transporting someone.
Florida law also requires a TNC driver involved in an accident, upon request, to disclose whether the driver was logged on to a digital network or engaged in a prearranged ride at the time of the accident. Kurzman Law Group can investigate the records rather than asking you to argue with the driver or insurer yourself.

What If I Was a Lyft Passenger and I Do Not Own a Car?
Do not assume that means there is no insurance available to help with your injuries. Lyft passenger claims can involve several possible sources of coverage depending on who caused the accident and the driver’s status at the time.
You do not need to understand which carrier should pay before obtaining legal help. Kurzman Law Group can identify the applicable insurance and communicate with the carriers on your behalf.
What If I Felt Fine but Started Hurting
After the Lyft Accident?
This is common after motor-vehicle accidents. At the scene, a Lyft passenger may be focused on luggage, getting to the airport, reaching a hotel, calling family, getting another ride, or simply processing what happened. Someone may genuinely believe they are fine and then notice neck pain, back pain, headaches, stiffness, shoulder pain, numbness, tingling, or soreness later.
Do not ignore symptoms simply because you initially thought you were fine, and do not make definitive statements to an insurance adjuster about whether you are injured before you actually know.
Florida law generally requires you to receive initial medical care within 14 days after a motor-vehicle accident. If you do not see a medical provider within that period, you may lose access to PIP medical coverage for the accident. If symptoms develop, obtain appropriate medical evaluation based on your condition and contact Kurzman Law Group.
Who Pays My Medical Bills After a Lyft Accident?
There may be several insurance policies involved after a Lyft crash. Which coverage applies may depend on whether you were the Lyft passenger, another driver, the Lyft driver, or another injured person; the driver’s app status; who caused the collision; and what other insurance is available.
You should not be expected to untangle that while trying to obtain medical care. Kurzman Law Group can identify available insurance, communicate with the carriers, and help guide the medical-billing and injury-claim process.
What If I Cannot Get an Appointment With My Doctor?
People sometimes discover that their regular physician cannot see them quickly or does not routinely treat automobile-accident injuries. Do not simply ignore continuing symptoms because one office does not have an appointment available.
The appropriate provider depends on your symptoms and medical needs, and emergency symptoms require appropriate emergency care. Kurzman Law Group can help explain the insurance process and, when legally permissible, assist you in locating appropriate medical providers near you if you do not already have one. Medical decisions themselves should be made by qualified healthcare professionals.
What If the Lyft Driver Was Distracted by the App?
Lyft drivers use the app to receive ride requests, navigate to pickup locations, communicate with riders, and follow trip information. Using the platform does not excuse unsafe driving.
If distraction may have contributed to the crash, app activity, phone information when legally obtainable, dash-camera footage, witnesses, vehicle data, photographs, roadway evidence, and other electronic records may become relevant. We do not assume the app caused every Lyft accident. We investigate what the driver was doing and what the available evidence shows.
What If the Lyft Driver Blames Another Driver for the Accident?
More than one driver can contribute to a Lyft crash. The Lyft driver may blame another vehicle, the other driver may blame the Lyft driver, and their insurers may each argue that someone else is responsible.
Those are positions taken after the crash, not necessarily the final answer. Depending on the case, useful evidence may include Lyft trip information, app status, vehicle damage, photographs, police records, witness statements, dash-camera footage, surveillance video, roadway evidence, and insurance information.
Do not put yourself in the middle of an argument between insurance companies. Kurzman Law Group can investigate the collision and handle the insurance communications on your behalf.
What If My Lyft Accident Involved Several Vehicles?
A Lyft crash can be part of a chain reaction or multi-vehicle collision. A Lyft may be rear-ended and pushed into another car, or one vehicle may change lanes and cause several drivers to collide.
Those accidents may involve several insurance companies and competing versions of what occurred. The sequence of impacts can matter. Kurzman Law Group can investigate the chain of events and identify the drivers, vehicle owners, and insurance coverage that may be involved.
What Should I Save From the Lyft App?
Preserve what you can without deleting or changing anything. The most useful items generally include:
- the electronic Lyft trip receipt;
- the driver's name and photograph;
- vehicle and license-plate information;
- pickup point and destination;
- trip date and time;
- messages or notifications connected with the ride; and
- screenshots showing the trip or driver information.
Florida’s TNC statute requires an electronic receipt after completion of a ride listing the origin and destination, total time and distance, and total fare paid. You do not have to determine which records ultimately become evidence. Preserve what you have and let Kurzman Law Group determine what additional information should be requested or preserved.
Lyft Accidents at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a significant Lyft pickup and dropoff location. Lyft maintains a dedicated FLL airport page and directs riders to use the app for airport rides and pickup instructions.
Airport traffic creates a different driving environment from an ordinary neighborhood street. A Lyft driver may be watching the app, locating a passenger, moving between terminal traffic, changing lanes, entering a pickup area, or leaving the airport while surrounded by vehicles and pedestrians.
An accident can happen while the Lyft driver is approaching FLL, waiting for or traveling to the passenger, carrying the passenger away from the airport, or navigating a pickup or dropoff area. The exact timing can matter because the driver’s status may affect the insurance analysis.
If a Lyft accident occurs at or around FLL, preserve the trip information and contact Kurzman Law Group as soon as possible.

Lyft Accidents on I-95 and Fort Lauderdale Roads
A Lyft trip in Fort Lauderdale can move from a residential street to a major roadway or interstate within minutes. Trips frequently involve I-95, Broward Boulevard, Sunrise Boulevard, Federal Highway/U.S. 1, Las Olas Boulevard, and Oakland Park Boulevard.
The driving environment can change quickly. A driver may leave a residential or hotel pickup, merge onto a major road, change lanes on I-95, navigate downtown traffic, or travel toward Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport during the same trip.
The crash location may also affect what evidence can be found. Businesses, hotels, condominiums, residential properties, dash cameras, and other sources may have video or witnesses, and that evidence may not remain available indefinitely. Early investigation can matter.
Is There $1 Million Available in Every Lyft Accident?
No. Florida’s $1 million TNC liability requirement applies during the statutory prearranged-ride period. Different coverage requirements apply when a driver is logged into the network but has not yet accepted a ride.
Even when a $1 million policy applies, that does not mean the claim is automatically worth $1 million. Insurance coverage establishes a potential source of payment; it does not establish the amount of damages. The claim still must be evaluated based on the accident, injuries, medical evidence, financial losses, legal responsibility, and other relevant facts.
How Much Is a Lyft Accident Case Worth?
There is no reliable formula that can determine the value of a Lyft accident from a handful of facts. The value may depend on the nature and extent of the injuries, medical treatment already received, future medical needs, lost wages, future earning ability, permanent impairment, pain and suffering where legally recoverable, who caused the crash, available insurance, and the quality of the evidence.
A generic settlement calculator or artificial intelligence cannot determine which insurance policy applies, what evidence needs to be preserved, whether multiple drivers share responsibility, or how the medical evidence affects the claim. You need to understand the law and know which questions to ask before you can properly evaluate a Lyft accident case.
Kurzman Law Group investigates the actual facts rather than assigning a value from a formula.
How Long Do I Have to Hire a Lawyer After a Lyft Accident?
You do not have to hire a lawyer at the scene, but waiting can make a Lyft accident harder to investigate. Trip information, electronic records, video, witness information, and vehicle evidence may become harder to obtain as time passes, while insurance companies may begin investigating immediately.
Florida has legal deadlines for accident claims and lawsuits, but evidence can disappear long before those deadlines arrive. Florida also generally requires initial medical care within 14 days after a motor-vehicle accident for PIP medical coverage to remain available.
There is usually little benefit in waiting to obtain legal guidance while the insurers are already working on the claim.

Why Choose Kurzman Law Group
After a Lyft Accident?
Lyft accident claims can involve questions that do not arise in an ordinary two-car collision. The driver’s status within the Lyft platform may affect the insurance coverage available, and knowing the right questions to ask matters.
Was the driver offline, online and waiting, already matched with a passenger, traveling to the pickup, or actively transporting someone? Did another driver cause the crash? Which policy applies? What evidence exists in the Lyft platform? These questions should be investigated before anyone tries to value the claim.
Attorney Yana Kurzman has practiced law since 1994 and has been licensed in Florida since 2011. She is directly involved in the firm’s serious injury cases. Kurzman Law Group represents clients in Fort Lauderdale and throughout Florida and assists both English- and Russian-speaking clients.

How Much Insurance Is Available If I Am Hurt in a Lyft?
It depends on the Lyft driver’s status at the time of the collision and the facts of the accident. Florida requires at least $1 million in primary liability coverage during a prearranged ride. Different limits apply while a driver is logged into the app but has not yet accepted a ride.
What If I Was a Passenger and Another Driver Caused the Crash?
The other driver’s insurance may be involved, but other coverage may also need to be investigated. Kurzman Law Group can identify the applicable policies rather than relying only on the first insurer involved.
What If the Lyft Driver Says He Wasn't Working?
The app status matters. Kurzman Law Group can investigate whether the driver was offline, online and available, traveling to pick up a passenger, or engaged in a ride.
What If a Lyft Driver Hit Me but I Was Not a Lyft Passenger?
You may still have a Lyft-related claim if the driver was using the Lyft platform when the collision occurred. The applicable insurance may depend on what the driver was doing in the app.
Should I Give Lyft or an Insurance Company a Recorded Statement?
Speak with Kurzman Law Group before giving a detailed recorded statement about the collision, your physical condition, or your medical history. We can communicate with the insurers on your behalf.
What If I Did Not Feel Hurt Until the Next Day?
Symptoms can become more noticeable after the initial stress of an accident. Obtain appropriate medical evaluation based on your condition and remember that Florida generally requires initial medical care within 14 days after the crash or you may lose access to PIP medical coverage.
What Should I Save From the Lyft App?
Preserve the trip receipt, driver information, vehicle information, pickup and destination, messages, and other trip information available in your account. Kurzman Law Group can determine what additional records need to be obtained or preserved.
What If My Lyft Accident Happened at Fort Lauderdale Airport?
Preserve your Lyft trip details and contact Kurzman Law Group. The driver’s app and trip status can be important in determining which insurance applies, and Lyft maintains specific airport ride information for FLL.
Is Every Lyft Accident Worth $1 Million?
No. The existence of a $1 million policy during a qualifying prearranged ride does not determine the value of a claim. The value depends on the injuries, medical evidence, damages, legal responsibility, available coverage, and other facts.
